POEMS BY TOM THAYER
HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD
He made every redwood, reaching towards the sky He made every flower, that graces the eye Every mountain and peak, that heavenwards seek And every oyster that on the ocean bottom lie.
Every great man, every king, every title And every living creature, and birds in recital He made them all, the large and the small And His love for us never asked for requital.
When His creations were completed He decided that man Should have dominion, and should rule Over all creatures and land.
He supplied all man’s needs His creations He adored And man fellowshipped with Him And never grew bored.
But one day evil came in the disguise of doubt And man’s fellowship with God, by sin was cast out But God so loved the world, victory can still be won He gave us a way back, by sending his Son.
For when evil came, and your spirit became dead God decided to give another chance instead So Christ is the answer, He is the only way Open your heart up, accept Him today.
Amen
THE GIFT
What makes you think As you wander through life That God meant for you to have Worry, fear or strife?
His perfect plan for you Was devised years and years ago When from His place in glory God’s Son agreed to go.
And in your place He died Pain and agony filled His precious face But His death was only temporal For He arose from His resting place.
The miracle of miracles Took place that glorious day As Jesus claimed our victory And showed us all the way.
Our lives should be victorious Rejoicing should be on our tongue We are eternal winners For Satan’s forces, that day were hung.
Lift up you heads, be strong and glad For to us a priceless gift was given It’s free, no charge, to those who accept God’s perfect plan from heaven.
Amen
SEARCHING
There’s a purpose for each life, divinely provided But hidden like a diamond in coal. We must search it out, regardless of cost To insure us our place in God’s fold.
Some have been chosen to Pastor a church, To guide, and teach others to pray. And God uses many to travel far and wide Spreading the gospel of Christ every day.
But the unsung heroes, known only to Him Are the brothers and sisters who tend To the sick and afflicted children of God Whose loves and hearts they try to mend.
God loves us all and is anxious to help At whatever we’re willing to do. He doesn’t care about our man-made faiths Whether we’re Catholic, Protestant or Jew
So, if you’re searching and know not your plan That God had designed for your life. Get on your knees, pray, then wait on the Lord Whose own plan was to give up his life.
Amen
THE KEY OF LOVE
How hot a flame, must it take To cause the steel to mold. Man has varied it many times Beginning in days of old.
For when the steel is melted down Someone’s vision begins to unfold. The object slowly takes its shape Then slowly it becomes cold.
I feel man’s heart can be like steel Sometimes a flame is needed. To melt it down and shape it new Like a garden, freshly weeded.
But unlike cold steel, the heart requires More than just a flame A key is needed to unlock the doubt And rescue it from its shame.
And once the heart has been unlocked Its, new form does unfold. And begins a life of love and joy But never again becomes cold.
There is but one key that fits all hearts And is waiting for your call The key has a name, it’s Jesus Christ And He’s available to us all.
Amen
THE FIRST STEP
I used to walk alone. Inside my heart did ache. I knew I needed Jesus But that first step, I couldn’t take.
Many times I heard God’s message How Jesus had died for me. But each time I cried and cried inside For I couldn’t bend that knee
Many Christians I had met and known And their joy I knew was real. They laughed and talked of Jesus Christ Their love I surely could feel.
Then one day, praise God for that That first step I did make. My heart opened up to the Master And instantly lost its’ ache.
Peace and joy I found that day As my mouth confessed the King. And now I know that He is real For now my heart does sing.
Amen
A MESSAGE OF LOVE
If I could only put into words What my heart would love to say I could praise my beloved Saviour Praise Him all the day.
The love I have inside for Him, I simply cannot reveal So I must tell you only Half of what I feel.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus How I love that name Master, Saviour, Creator They are all one in the same.
Sometimes I cry when I think Of Jesus, on that cross But then I shout and holler ‘Cause I know He’s Satan’s boss.
He lives, He lives, He lives The King of Kings is here No matter what my problem is He’s always oh so near.
I love you Lord, I want you to know That when we come to that time of rest I don’t care about crowns, rewards or things But simply to lay my weary head upon your blessed chest.
To look into your loving eyes And thank you from this heart And then words on pages I won’t need For never again will we ever part.
Amen
THE COLOR OF LOVEJust what is this thing that man calls love A feeling felt universally. It’s a word that cannot be accurately defined Yet it’s in the whole world’s vocabulary.
Does love have a shape, a size, or a color Can we view it with just our eyes – What exactly is this phenomenon That touches so many, many lives?
I’d like to offer an observation That possible could provide a clue. It appears that this thing called love Has a lot to do with you.
Does your heart feel joy from time to time When you see a long, lost friend. Or when you first met the girl of your dreams With whom the rest of your life you would spend.
How about your first child, snug in your arms As you gazed on its precious face? Every parent has experienced this heart-felt love In every part of the world and each race.
But one day a man came and brought the answer. He shared it with all of mankind – His answer was simple, to the question of love That we never before could define.
He taught us the truth, that God was love And commanded all people love their brother Teaching love should not depend on a person’s color But that everyone should love one another.
Amen
CHILD OF A KING
Our lives do not always truly reflect The gift we so gloriously received. For no longer by Satan are we bound And no longer must we be deceived.
We are victorious winners, spirits so free Who should praise God with voices that ring Lifting up our hands, rejoicing in our hearts Let all God’s children be eager to sing!
God wants us to be happy, healthy and wise To live long lives of abundance and joy His Word bears this out, divinely revealed So stop worrying and begin to enjoy.
Call on the Lord, praise Him in prayer His number can always be dialed. He loves us so much that He’s always waiting To answer a call from his child.
So if you abide in the Lord, with faith of a child Pure joy and happiness it will bring. You’ll be blessed by the Father, from heaven above For you’re surely the Child of a King.
Amen
THE POWER OF PRAYER
Mighty kings have often wielded their power Great battles and spoils they have won. But none of these kings have ever possessed The power bestowed by God’s Son.
Pray without ceasing, standing or on bended knee Jesus has already shown us the way. He prayed to the Father, seeking His help Never failing to communicate each day.
And when Christ ascended, the Comforter He sent – To guide us and keep our path straight. So we wouldn’t stumble or fall in the traps. That Satan has filled with evil bait.
The way we can remain on the right path Is by being sensitive to the spirit of love Constantly in touch, opening our hearts And praying to our Father above.
But believe when you pray, your faith display For by faith God is pleased and will bless you. For whatever you ask, believing in Jesus’ name God is faithful, just and willing to do.
God’s word is truth, His part He guarantees To all faithful children who might dare. To believe their Father, with childlike faith - And be rewarded by the power of prayer.
Amen
WAITING FOR THE KING
The Lord is my Savior, in Him I do trust He forgave me of all evil, iniquity and lust. My love for Him knows no earthly bounds And I await His return with the heavenly sounds.
As angels will be singing those glorious notes Returning with Him, as if on heavenly floats. The trumpet will sound, all saints will obey For their ears are trained towards that great day.
My joy will be limitless, too breathtaking to describe With Jesus appearing to claim his beloved bride. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah, I’ll cry For Jesus has promised that never would I die.
Forever, and ever with my Saviour I’ll be His kingdom is mine, because He died on a tree. Praise be to Jesus, Praise be to the King On that glorious day, the praises will ring.
But while I am still here, awaiting that great day I’ll be faithful to study, to watch and to pray. But most of all, I must somehow reach the lost For if I don’t they must be punished at a dreadful cost
I must tell them to accept Jesus, as Master and King So when He returns, His praises they can sing I must help train their ears, the trumpet to obey So they won’t miss Jesus, when he returns that day.
Amen
FAITH
Faith is the essence of hope defined; The reality of life revealed. The promises of God, acted upon, Proof positive we’re saved and healed.
To each child of God, a measure is given; God watches intently to see, If the precious gift is used to produce More fruit on His heavenly tree.
For God is pleased, His Word declares When we trust Him with our life. Just as in marriage, each partner shares, Each other’s trust, both husband and wife.
So, if we wish, to please the Lord, We must have Faith as a little child. Believing, receiving, everything in his Word, Like Jesus, our example, our lives should be styled.
Every time we ask, without wavering to or fro, Our Faith will grow to mature. And soon our efforts will begin to show, Becoming strong, courageous and secure.
Amen
VINE OF SALVATION
Masterfully God designed the Vine of Salvation He used grace to establish the root. And provided us as branches, expecting of us To grow strong and to bear Him much fruit.
With Jesus as the vine and we as branches The harvest would surely be great. God’s baskets would never be wanting for fruit Constantly filling at a Heavenly rate.
But sorrowfully the branches failed to care And their fruit soon died of neglect So God pruned the vine, renewing its’ strength And new branches became His elect.
Praise God for His Son, the loving Christ Who grants us a place on the vine. And thank God for giving us the precious Holy Spirit Who can turn sour grapes into Holy wine.
Amen
THE ROCK OF AGES
Once upon many centuries past The prophets of God made mention, Of one who would come shining forth And gain the whole World’s attention.
King David described him, wonderfully so And even though many would mock, Nothing could stem God’s prophetic plan Of the emergence of salvations rock.
He came to Earth, and shook the World Not by violence or fear, but as a dove, Only one man is history every made such impact Teaching the world the meaning of love.
Jesus of Nazareth, the Lamb of God, By refusing to earn Satan’s wages, Would forever be etched in all Christian’s minds As our Saviour and eternal Rock of Ages.
Amen
MIRACLES
The birth of a child is a miracle indeed A life saved from death is one too. We wonder amazed as each one is performed And marvel at what God can do.
For miracles are special, divinely given And it has never been truly explained Why some of us are blessed by His glorious acts Which our Lord has sometimes ordained.
We can only surmise, our knowledge so small That God has a plan for our lives And with a miracle, our hearts might be softened Causing the scales to fall from our blind eyes.
But all the miracles, both present and past Our heavenly Father has lovingly bestowed. The greatest was sending His beloved Son So our sins would no longer be owed.
As we thank God for that greatest miracle of all We sometimes weep till our eyes become wet For we realize how much God truly loved us To allow Jesus to die for our debt.
Amen
